Activists protesting alleged layoff at Reliance detained

Around 50 members of an employees union were arrested as they were heading towards Mukesh Ambani's residence to protest alleged lay-offs.

Police on Thursday detained around 50 members of an employees union in Reliance Industries who were heading towards company chairman Mukesh Ambani’s residence at Seawind in Cuffe Parade to protest alleged layoff of some employees in one of the firm’s units. The protesters were detained while they were going to Ambani’s residence and they have been sent to Azad Maidan police station,a senior police officer from Cuffe Parade police station said.

RIL employees union Reliance CRS Anyay Nirmulan Sanghatana alleged retrenchment of some employees at the company’s unit at Patalganga near Panvel in neighbouring Raigad district. Police sources said personnel have been deployed to deal with the situation,adding that the is a possibility of more protesters coming.
