Volkswagen’s Indian unit, which had denied installing the “cheat device”, faced searching questions from the National Green Tribunal on Tuesday for alleged norm violations.

“You announced a recall of 3,23,700 lakh vehicles in … Why have you not recalled these vehicles?…What are you doing to rectify the problem in your vehicles,” asked the Principal Bench of the NGT. The Bench asked Volkswagen to file an affidavit by May 19 stating what action it was planning to take with regard to vehicles. It also quizzed the carmaker’s earlier submission which had stated that “on road” emissions from its cars were 1.1 times to 2.6 times higher than applicable BS-IV norms.
