Get ‘out of the box’ ideas for Budget: Modi to ministers

The Prime Minister asked his Council to ensure that their ministries spend budgetary allocations evenly throughout the year.

Interacting with the Council of Ministers at a high-tea at his residence on Monday evening, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi exhorted the ministers to source innovative and “out of the box” ideas from the general public for their possible inclusion into the upcoming Union Budget—the first full-fledged budget of this government.

Disapproving the common practice of utilising funds in a rush towards the end of the financial year, Modi asked his Council of Ministers to ensure that their ministries spend budgetary allocations evenly throughout the year.

Underlining the point, the Prime Minister also said that spending budgetary allocations uniformly through the year was the best way to ensure that ministries get their desired allocations in the next financial year.

He recalled that the “Swachh Bharat” tagline had emerged out of such interactions with the common man.

The PM also made a presentation on e-books that are being prepared by various ministries and stressed the need to achieve transparency in governance using electronic means.

Modi also told his Council of Ministers — comprising 26 Cabinet Ministers and 39 Ministers of State — that they needed to focus more on the eight northeastern states. He also asked them to spend reasonable periods of time in these states so as to give them the required attention.
