Devendra Fadnavis: No potable water for cricket pitches

“Yet, if some decision to relocate the venue outside Maharashtra is taken, we have no problem,” said Fadnavis.

Asserting that there was no question of supplying potable water to nurture the cricket pitches for the Indian Premier League matches in Maharashtra when the state was facing a drought, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said, “If they decide to host the matches outside Maharashtra, we have no problems.”

“My government is firm that it would not provide potable water for cricket matches. In any case, we can provide non-potable water (recycled and not fit for drinking) for the matches.”

“Yet, if some decision to relocate the venue outside Maharashtra is taken, we have no problem,” he said.

On Thursday, the division bench of the Bombay High Court had termed it a criminal waste to provide water for cricket pitches at a time when people in Marathwada were not getting water supply for three to four days in a row. The court was responding to a PIL filed by an NGO demanding that IPL be not held in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur because of drought conditions.
