Bollywood's obsession with festive releases is nothing new. However, not all movies opening during festivals have a great time at the box office. As Akshay Kumar's Housefull 4, Rajkummar Rao's Made In China and Saand Ki Aankh, starring Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar, lock horns this Diwali weekend, we look at films that released on Diwali and how they fared at the box office. (The box office figures are mentioned as per Bollywood Hungama.)
Thugs of Hindostan (2018): The Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan starrer was a box office disaster despite the hype around it. The film did a lifetime business of only Rs 151.19 crore at the box office.
Golmaal Again (2017): This film, starring Ajay Devgn, Parineeti Chopra, Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi and others, was loved by the audience. It earned Rs 205.69 crore.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016): Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma starrer, which also had an extended cameo of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Fawad Khan, was received well at the box office. The film however minted only Rs 112.48 crore at the box office.
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015): Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor's Diwali release managed to collect Rs 210.16 crore.
Happy New Year (2014): Farah Khan directorial starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and others tanked but managed to collect a good amount at the box office. It earned Rs 203 crore.
Krrish 3 (2013): Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut film was a hit and earned Rs 244.92 crore.
Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012): Yash Chopra's last directorial had an average reception. It collected Rs 120.85 crore.
Ra.One (2011): Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor's film earned Rs 114.29 crore.
Golmaal 3 (2010): The Rohit Shetty directorial collected Rs 106.34 crore.
Blue, All The Best, Main Aurr Mrs Khanna (2009): Perhaps the only year when three films released and none could make a mark at the box office. While Blue earned only Rs 38.55 crore, All The Best earned Rs 41.41 crore and Main Aurr Mrs Khanna earned Rs 7.40 crore.
