If Bollywood gave smash hits in the form of Dilwale, Bajirao Mastani, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Bajrangi Bhaijaan then there were a few disappointments too this year.
Movies like Shaandaar, Bombay Velvet, Roy, which boasted of superb star cast, failed to score big at the box office and were declared flops. Take a look at a few other movies which had poor show at the box office this year and failed to rake in the moolah.
Bombay Velvet: The Anurag Kashyap film starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma stands among the biggest flops of this year. The film which showcased Ranbir Kapoor as a street fighter could not lead fans to cinema halls. The film was a major disaster at the box office and collected a mere Rs. 23.87 crores while the makers had spent a whopping Rs. 110 cr on the making of film.
Shaandaar: Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt starrer's trailer was an instant hit, people were talking about the fresh new jodi of Bollywood and its director Vikas Bahl. But the movie failed to do any wonders for the onscreen couple and tanked at the box office. The film was directed by the 'Queen' director and people had lot of expectations. The film's release was also on the festive occasion of Dussehra but people rejected it. Shaandaar made at a budget of Rs. 75 cr managed to collect a mere Rs. 23.08 cr.
Roy: Another flop of the year by Ranbir Kapoor, 'Roy' featured him opposite Jacqueline Fernandez. Directed by Vikramjit Singh, the film also had Arjun Rampal. People grooved over its songs, but failed to accept the film. Made with a budget of Rs. 40 cr, the film could earn just Rs. 36.32 crore.
Phantom: Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer 'Phantom' was not as pleasing to the eyes as the trailers seemed to be. Directed by 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' filmmaker Kabir Khan, the film was based on the book Mumbai Avengers on the aftermath of 26/11 Mumbai attacks. The film was made at a budget of Rs. 70 crores and earned Rs. 49.84 crores.
Katti Batti: After her stunning performances in 'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' and 'Queen', there were high hopes from Kangana Ranaut's 'Katti Batti' but the film was a major disaster at the box office. Kangana and Imran Khan could not match up to the expectations of the viewers and ended up losing the interest of the people. The film was made with a budget of Rs. 36 crores and earned Rs. 22.96 crores only.
Madhur Bhandarkar's film 'Calendar Girls' which lauched five new faces in Bollywood, was a put off. The director has already made films like Fashion and Heroine on the similar subject. The film was made on a budget of Rs 12 cr and could even earn 8 cr out of it.
All Is Well: Abhishek Bachchan and Asin starrer 'All is Well' also starring Rishi Kapoor and Supriya Pathak was directed by Umesh Shukla. The film opened to an average response and lost its charm very soon. The film could earn just Rs. 15.92 crores.
Ek Paheli Leela: The Sunny Leone film ‘Ek Paheli Leela’ failed to pull the audience in the theatres and it manged to rake only Rs. 5.30 cr at the box office. Many believed that Sunny Leone starrer would bomb at the box office and inspite of Sunny's item numbers and sensous scenes, the movie failed to connect with the audiences. Apart from Sunny Leone, the movie starred Jay Bhanushali, Rajneish Duggal and Jas Arora.
Detective Byomkesh Bakshi: Director Dibakar Banerjee's 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' Sushant Singh Rajput had opened to an average start at the box office earning only Rs 4.2 cr. The Dibakar Banerjee movie had great expectations but was a let-down at the box office. The film also featured Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee.
Main aur Charles: The movie, which was a biopic of the serial lady killer Charles Sobhraj had a disastrous weekend and it hardly managed to earn Rs. 2.30 crore over the weekend. Inspite of top performances by actor Randeep Hooda who played Charles shattered into pieces at the box office.
Shamitabh: R Balki's 'Shamitabh', saw the coming together of Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush but they failed to create magic at the box office. 'Shamitabh' was made at a budget of Rs 25 crore but couldn't manage to have a good box office collection.
Dolly Ki Doli: Sonam Kapoor scored an ace with 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo' opposite Salman Khan, but her film 'Dolly ki Doli' which was released earlier this year was a failure at the box office. The film earned a mere Rs. 13.04 cr after spending Rs. 25 cr on making.
Tevar: Inspite of having all the elements and masala, the Arjun Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha starrer film Tevar failed to scrore at the box office and collected only Rs 7.05 crore on its opening day. The overall business at the box office was Rs. 36 crore which was a pretty low figure for a Sonakshi starrer whose movies have entered Rs. 100 crore club in the past.
Kuch Kuch Locha Hai: The sex comedy starring former adult movie star Sunny Leone and Ram Kapoor didn't work with the audience. The result reflected at the box office. Inspite of the skin show and being a sex comedy which usuaully does good business, the movie's lifetime collection was only Rs. 3.26 crore.
