In another instance of gun violence in the US, three people were killed and three others injured in a shooting at Maryland’s capital city Sunday night. The shooting, which took place in a private residence, is believed to have stemmed from an ‘interpersonal dispute’. Police said that they see no harm to the citizens.
Meanwhile, a portion of an elevated expressway in Philadelphia collapsed to the ground after a truck carrying flammable cargo caught fire. Video from the scene showed a massive concrete slab had fallen from I-95 onto the road below. No one was injured.
Three people were killed and three wounded in a shooting Sunday night at a house in Maryland’s capital city, police said. Annapolis Police Chief Edward Jackson told reporters at a media briefing that the shooting stemmed from what he described as an “interpersonal dispute” and that there was no further threat to the public.
“It’s a very active and fluid investigation. We’re still trying to determine everything that occurred. We’re still piecing it together. We have a lot more work to do,” Jackson said.
He declined to elaborate on the relationship between the people involved, but said those killed ranged in age from their 20s to their 50s. He said that authorities hadn’t established a firm motive for the shooting. (AP)
An elevated section of Interstate 95 collapsed early Sunday in Philadelphia after a tanker truck carrying flammable cargo caught fire, closing a heavily travelled segment of the East Coast’s main north-south highway indefinitely, authorities said.
Video from the scene showed a massive concrete slab had fallen from I-95 onto the road below.
Mark Fusetti, a retired Philadelphia police sergeant, said he was driving south toward the city’s airport when he noticed thick, black smoke rising over the highway.
As he passed the fire, the road beneath began to “dip”, creating a noticeable depression that was visible in video he took of the scene, he said. He saw traffic in his rearview mirror come to a halt. Soon after, the northbound lanes of the highway crumbled. “It was crazy timing,” Fusetti said. “For it to buckle and collapse that quickly, it’s pretty remarkable.” (Read more)
A New York City firefighter lost his life while trying to save his daughter, who became distressed while swimming at a New Jersey beach, authorities said. FDNY firefighter Mark Batista of Teaneck, New Jersey, died Friday morning, WNBC-TV reported.
The 39-year-old reportedly went into the water at Sylvania Avenue beach in Avon-by-the-Sea around 8.30 am to assist his 15-year-old daughter. It was not immediately clear what happened to the girl to require assistance near a jetty, the station reported.
First responders contacted by witnesses rescued the girl from the water, but her father was not found until around 10 am about 15 meters from the shore. Police said emergency responders attempted life-saving measures before Batista was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he died, WNBC reported. (AP)

Thousand of dead fished washed along the Gulf Coast in Texas this week, in a startling sight recorded by a couple who were strolling through the beach. A CNN report said that the occurrence has been described as a "low dissolved oxygen event" by wildlife experts.
“Was hoping to take advantage of the flat surf and catch a quick limit of speckled trout, but things didn’t go as planned, unfortunately!” said Darrell Schoppe, who posted a video from the beach on Facebook, as per the report. "Thousands of dead fish from the mouth of the Brazos River down the entire shoreline for miles headed east on Bryan and Quintana Beach!!"
