In a major security nightmare breakthrough, Taylor Swift’s three concerts in Vienna have been cancelled after the administration confirmed that an attack was planned, the organizers said on Wednesday.
Austria’s Chancellor Karl Nehammer, in a statement said, “A tragedy was prevented.” The alert was sounded by Austria’s DSN (Directorate for Security and Intelligence).
In a post on X, Chancellor Nehammer said, “Thanks to the intensive cooperation of our police and the newly established DSN with foreign services, the threat was identified early on, combated and a tragedy prevented.”
The Austrian police arrested two people on Wednesday who have been accused of plotting terror attacks at concerts, the director general for public security, Franz Ruf said in a statement during a press conference on Wednesday.
The organizer of Taylor Swift’s concert, scheduled to be held in Austria, said that the entire booking amount will be refunded automatically.
Barracuda.music, in a post on Instagram said, “With confirmation from government officials of a planned terrorist attack at Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety.”
Ruf partially revealed the identity of the accused and said that the suspect is an Austrian citizen and had pledged allegiance to Islamic State.
“During our investigations, we identified preparatory actions and noted that the 19 year-old suspect had a particular focus on the Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna,” Ruf said in the press briefing.
Taylor Swift’s concert was scheduled to happen from Thursday to Saturday in Vienna and the police had been expecting around 65,000 people in attendance, while around 15,000 outside of the stadium.
