At least two people were killed and one was reported missing after a train struck multiple pedestrians on Sunday evening in northern Ohio’s Fremont, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 7pm in Fremont, near Lake Erie between Toledo and Cleveland, AP reported quoting WTOL-TV, adding that the two fatalities were confirmed by Fremont Mayor Danny Sanchez.

WTOL-TV reported that at least one person was missing after the train struck the pedestrians and emergency personnel were searching the Sandusky River near the Miles Newton Bridge for the missing person.

Initial reports suggested that authorities had closed the Miles Newton Bridge after the incident as the search operation was underway. Fremont Police confirmed the development and stated that the bridge has been shut and urged the public to stay away from the area.

Fremont’s Mayor Sanchez informed that the two deceased persons involved in the incident were adults but their identity have not been released at this time.

Multiple law enforcement agencies were investigating the incident and were at the site. In a statement, Sandusky County Sheriff Chris Hilton said, “Fremont Police Department, our office, the Ballville Township Fire and Water Rescue, and our boat are out attempting rescue,” reported the News Messenger.
