After nine years as the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau on Monday announced plans to resign from his post, while saying that the country “deserves a a real choice in the next election”, BBC reported.

“I intend to resign as party leader as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide competitive process,” Trudeau said.

Addressing a press conference in Ottawa, Trudeau said that he will continue as the Canadian PM till a new Liberal Party leader is chosen.

“…. it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election,” The Guardian quoted him as saying.

While saying that he does not back down when faced with a fight, ” especially a very important one for our party and the country”, Trudeau said that he had taken the decision in the “interests of Canadians and the well being of democracy”, according to The Associated Press.

Trudeau, who took office in November 2015, is one of Canada’s longest serving prime ministers. Although he was initially praised for returning the country to its liberal past, his popularity has been on the decline for the past couple of years owing to rising inflation, a housing crisis, as well as a surge in immigration, among other issues.
