What can be expected in the ceasefire’s first phase? Bringing the 15-month conflict to a halt, the first phase, which will last for 6 weeks, will involve an Israeli withdrawal from Netzarim Corridor (in Central Gaza) and Philadelphi Corridor (near the Gaza-Egyptian border), and the release of 33 Israeli hostages in return for about 1,900 Palestinian prisoners, according to the BBC. The ceasefire was mediated by the United States, Qatar and Egypt in months of indirect talks between the warring sides.

Israel-Gaza Ceasefire Live Updates: Suspected settlers attacked Palestinian villages hours before Trump rescinded Biden sanctions

Shortly after suspected Jewish settlers stormed Palestinian villages in the occupied West Bank late Monday, setting cars and property ablaze, United States President Donald Trump canceled sanctions against Israelis accused of violence in the territory, news agency AP reported.

The report noted that the reversal of the Biden administration's sanctions, which were meant to punish radical settlers, could set the tone for a presidency that is expected to be more tolerant of Israel's expansion of settlements and of violence toward Palestinians.

Late Monday, dozens of masked men who are widely believed to be settlers marauded through at least two Palestinian villages and attacked homes and businesses, according to officials in Jinsafut and Al-Funduq, which are roughly 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Jerusalem.

Israel’s military said the men hurled rocks at soldiers who had arrived to disperse them, and that it had launched an investigation.Violence has surged in the West Bank during the Gaza war, so it was not clear if the attack had any link to the inauguration. (AP)

Israel-Gaza Ceasefire Live Updates: Trump rescinds sanctions on far-right Israeli settlers

Among other Biden-era executive orders that President Trump rescinded on Monday is one that authorizes sanctions on people who undermine peace in the occupied West Bank, AP reported.

The Biden administration used the executive order to impose a handful of sanctions on extremist settlers accused of using violence against Palestinians who live in the West Bank after violence erupted after Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel.

Settlers in the territory have celebrated the incoming Trump administration, believing it will take a more favorable approach to illegal settlements.

During his first term, Trump took unprecedented steps to support Israel’s territorial claims, including recognizing Jerusalem as its capital and moving the US Embassy there, and recognizing Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights. (AP)

Israel-Gaza Ceasefire Live Updates: UN says aid is flowing smoothly into Gaza

The United Nations (UN) humanitarian coordinator in Gaza has said that trucks from the UN, aid groups, governments and the private sector are arriving and no major looting has been reported – just a few minor incidents, news agency AP reported.

Nearly 900 trucks of aid entered Gaza on the third day of the ceasefire Tuesday, the United Nations said, which is significantly higher than the 600 trucks called for in the deal, as per the report.

Muhannad Hadi, who is the deputy UN coordinator for the Middle East peace process, said the UN hopes to start “early recovery” programs, beginning with cash-for-work removing the tons of rubble in Gaza. But he said the UN must make sure the banking system is operating and electricity is back, stressing the critical role of UN member states and the private sector in early recovery.

Hadi said lawlessness and looting happen in any war situation but with the ceasefire in Gaza the UN is hoping for a restoration of law and order, and he stressed that the minor incidents reported were not by organized criminals who looted UN convoys during the war. (AP)

Israel-Gaza Ceasefire Live Updates: Donald Trump considering to visit Middle East, but 'not immediately'

United States President Donald Trump said he is considering going to the Middle East, but not immediately amid the return of hostages, while reiterating that the attack on Israel by Hamas should not have happened, news agency PTI reported.

Taking credit for the return of hostages, Trump said: “When you find out, you’re not going to be too happy because it was terrible. But the hostages are starting to come back."

"If I weren't here, they would have never come back. They would have all died. If this were done a year earlier, if (Joe) Biden would have done this deal a year-and-a-half, two years ago... Frankly, it should have never happened, October 7 should have never happened," he said.

"You go back just six months, many of these young people were living -- you know, young people don't die like that. But now they're dying. And you wonder why they're dying; they're being killed. Biden couldn't get it done. It was only after the imposition that I put on as a deadline that got it done," he added. (PTI/AP)

At least 9 Palestinians killed, 40 wounded after Israel’s major military operation in Jenin

At least nine Palestinians were killed and 40 others were left wounded after Israel Tuesday launched a major military operation in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin, news agency AP reported.

This operation came as Israel’s ceasefire with Hamas in Gaza entered its third day, bringing the 15-month conflict to a halt.

Israel's ceasefire with Hamas in Gaza does not apply to the West Bank, where Israeli troops have carried out near-daily raids during the war that often ignite gunbattles, as per the report.

The built-up Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank has long been the center of armed struggle, and has been a focus of Israeli raids. The Israeli military said in a statement that “forces have initiated a counterterrorism operation” in the area. (AP)
