After Israel launched a “targeted” attack on Lebanon’s capital Beirut against a Hezbollah commander, countries have started criticising the attack as it could lead to another war ramifications in the West Asian region.
The Russian-state run TASS news agency quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday which said, “An Israeli strike on Lebanon’s capital Beirut is a flagrant violation of international law.”
The Israeli strike in Beirut, targeting a senior Hezbollah militant commander, is a retaliation against the militant group which the Israeli administration has claimed attacked the Tel Aviv occupied Golan Heights with a rocket on Saturday.
Israel in a statement after the attack stated that it was the deadliest assault on the territory of Israel since the October 7 attack on the country by Gaza based Hamas militant group.
The strike in Golan Heights killed 12 children and teenagers. Experts have raised their apprehension over a widespread regional war between Israel and Iran backed Hezbollah militants, who are based in Lebanon.
Iran’s embassy in Lebanon criticised Israel over the attack and stated, “Iran strongly condemns sinful and cowardly Israeli aggression that targeted the southern Beirut suburb.”
The United States has supported Israel in this fiasco and said that the Golan Heights attack was carried out by Hezbollah militants.
“The US does not believe war between Hezbollah and Israel is inevitable,” White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said on Tuesday.
After attacking the target in Beirut, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on X about the strike and said, “The IDF carried out a targeted strike in Beirut, on the commander responsible for the murder of the children in Majdal Shams and the killing of numerous additional Israeli civilians.”
According to news agency Reuters, the Lebanon’s state media agency has said, “An Israeli strike had targeted the area around Hezbollah’s Shura Council in the Haret Hreik neighbourhood of the capital.”
