Kai Madison Trump, the eldest granddaughter of former US President Donald Trump, made an surprise appearance at the Republican National Convention (RNC) and provided a rare insight into his personal life through a speech.
On July 17, third day of the RNC at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 17-year-old Kai highlighted a side of Trump that “people don’t often see”, sharing anecdotes about playing golf with him. She noted that Trump tries to get into her head when they play on opposing teams, but she stands her ground, reminding him, “I’m a Trump too”.
Kai also addressed the recent assassination attempt on Trump at his Pennsylvania rally. She expressed her shock and concern upon hearing the news, emphasising the heartbreak of such an incident. She praised Trump for remaining resilient despite the shooting and his ongoing legal battles. “A lot of people have put my grandpa through hell, and he’s still standing,” she stated, calling him an “inspiration” and affirming her love and support.
Making her debut on the convention stage, Kai critiqued the media for portraying her “loving and caring” grandfather negatively. “But I know him for who he is,” she said. She stressed that Trump genuinely wants the “best” for the United States and will fight to make America great again.
She shared personal stories about Trump’s interest in his grandchildren’s education, calling him a “normal grandpa” who gives them candy and soda when their parents aren’t looking.
Kai mentioned that Trump frequently calls her during school to ask about her golf game, only to be reminded that she has to return to class. Even amid his legal troubles, Trump always inquires about her well-being and encourages her to strive for excellence.
Kai, daughter of Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Trump, enjoys golf, much like her grandfather. She often shares photos of her golfing on Instagram. Supporting her grandfather’s candidacy alongside her father, Kai demonstrated the Trump family’s deep-rooted political involvement.
Throughout her speech, Trump smiled, adding to the growing testimonials that aim to reveal a more personal side of the Republican leader.
Trump has demonised immigrants, mocked the LGBTQ community, and was found liable by a jury of sexually abusing a woman in the 1990s – which he still denies.
However, this week at the RNC, he has sought to soften those edges and has turned to women for help.
His daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, offered a humanising portrait on Tuesday of “the Donald Trump that I know”, portraying him as a doting grandfather, family man, and supportive father-in-law who encouraged her to take a job as a Fox News commentator. Model and rapper Amber Rose said the ex-president doesn’t care “if you’re Black, white, gay or straight”.
On Wednesday, it was Conway insisting that “in Donald Trump’s” Republican Party, “everyone is welcome”.
