Google has unveiled a new series of emojis celebrating gender and ethnic diversity. According to Google, more than 90 per cent of the online population uses emoji while chatting or commenting, and while the list of emojis is growing, diversity has not been a part of the same.
While emoji depicting different careers for men have been always there – the same cannot be said for women emoji, until now.
“In May, we proposed a set of new emoji to the Unicode Technical Committee that represent a wider range of professions for women (as well as men), and reflect the pivotal roles that women play in the world. Since then, we’ve worked closely with members of the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee to bring the proposal to life,” said Google in a blogpost.
The Unicode Emoji Subcommittee agreed to add 11 new professional emoji in different skin tones for both men and women – roughly 100 new emoji. Thirty-three of the existing emoji will get female versions as well. For example, you will be able to use a male or a female swimmer emoji.
“These new emoji are one of several efforts we’re making to better represent women in technology,” Google added.
Made with Code, a Google initiative to empower women with computer programming skills, is releasing a new project to teach coding skills through emoji-inspired stickers ahead of the World Emoji Day.
