Reliance Industries Limited chairman Mukesh Ambani is expected to make some crucial announcements related to the much awaited Reliance Jio mobile services. Ambani will address the Annual General Meeting of RIL on September 1 morning. It is unlikely that the full commercial rollout will start the same day, but the company could well go to the next level of its trial run.

It is reliably learnt that Ambani will speak about Reliance Jio at the AGM. However, it remains to be seen if he goes ahead and announces a final date for a full launch. Given that the service has been much delayed that could be a bit of a risk.

There has been a ramping up over the last couple of weeks and the service as well as the availability of 4G SIM has been opened up to more people. Earlier, the SIM was available only to those buying a Reliance Jio Lyf device, but over the past few days, a large number of brands have also been extended the offer to get a SIM. In fact, only a handful of hands, including Apple, are now not tied to the service.

There has been an overwhelming public response to the service, primarily driven by the access to free high-speed data till the service goes commercial. However, despite the rumours, there is no idea what the final tariff structure will be like. In all possibility, RJio services will be cheaper than existing services, especially when it comes to data packages. In anticipation, most of the rival service providers have cut fares of pre-paid services. There will be a full-fledged price war if the actual fares are as low as India is hoping it will be.
