A “mild blast” was reported in front of an Army camp at Lichubari in Assam’s Jorhat district late on Thursday. Local reports said the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (I) has accepted responsibility for the blast but there is no official confirmation yet.

A defence spokesperson said it was a “mild” blast and there are no reports of any casualties. The explosion comes shortly after a grenade blast at Sivasagar district earlier this month.

A defence spokesperson confirmed that the blast occurred near the Army gate of the military station at Jorhat but said details were still being ascertained. According to preliminary information, the explosive device, which was like a crude handmade bomb, was kept inside a dustbin.

The main gate of Lichubari military station was closed soon after the explosion as a precaution. Overall security was tightened and patrolling was also intensified in the area.

Jorhat District Commissioner Pulak Mahanta and senior officials of Assam Police were seen inside the military station after the incident.

Earlier, on November 22, a grenade had exploded near the gate of an Army camp at Tinsukia district. Soon after, another explosion was reported from the 149 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp at Joysagar area of Sivasagar district on December 9. The outlawed ULFA (I) outfit had accepted responsibility for both explosions and said the blasts were in response to the “arrogance” of Assam Director General of Police G P Singh.

Soon after the ULFA (I) statement in an email, DGP Singh took to X, formerly Twitter, and wrote, “We are committed to wipe out the remnants of terrorism that impedes growth of our state. And for that, if we have to sacrifice our life, we shall not hesitate, nor shall we waver from our determination to use full might of law against those who stand in path of our state’s growth, progress and development.”
