A Yemeni court on Monday began the trial of a senior Al-Qaeda suspect charged with funding militants in Yemen, which has been embarrassed by a recent al-Qaeda jail break.

Mohammad Hamdi al-Ahdal, named as Al-Qaeda’s number two in Yemen, was charged with forming an armed gang, financing Al-Qaeda militants and involvement in the death of 18 Yemeni soldiers. Ahdal, also known as Abu Asem al-Macci, denied the charges.

Ahdal, 35, was the aide of Al-Qaeda leader in Yemen, Ali QaedSenyan al-Harthi, who was killed by a missile fired by an unmanned CIA plane in Yemen in 2002. —Reuters
