Senior Maoist leader Indra alias Indrakka alias Karam Somari,35,died of snakebite in Gadchiroli on May 31

Senior Maoist leader Indra alias Indrakka alias Karam Somari,35,died of snakebite in Gadchiroli on May 31,an obituary note released by the rebels said Wednesday.

Indra was a member of the North Gadchiroli Divisional Committee of the CPI (Maoist). “She became a revolutionary in 1996,” the note signed by Shrinivas, the Maoists’ western regional committee spokesman, said.

Indra’s husband Kailash was killed in an encounter at Sindesur in Gadchiroli on April 12.

Indra, who hailed from a remote village in Bijapur district, suffered a leg injury some years ago that left her with a permanent limp. “That, however, didn’t hamper her military and political activities,” the note said. Indra was rewarded for her “exemplary” work and appointed to North Gadchiroli Divisional Committee in 2008,it added.

Senior Maoists such as Shankar Rao and Durganna have suffered snakebites in the past and had to be rushed to Raipur for treatment. “They survived but some other cadres have died,” sources said.
