Jinnah House govt property: Centre in HC

The Centre has told the Bombay High Court that it has gained “total legal ownership” of the historic Jinnah House in Mumbai.

The Centre has told the Bombay High Court that it has gained “total legal ownership” of the historic Jinnah House in Mumbai that was once owned by founder of Pakistan Mohammed Ali Jinnah and now is claimed by his heirs.

In an affidavit, the Foreign Ministry claimed the Centre had acquired Jinnah House as evacuee property “and hence all rights of evacuee and others stand extinguished”.

The affidavit was filed in response to a plea by Jinnah’s 91-year-old New York-based daughter Dina Wadia, claiming the house was hers as she is the sole heir to her father’s property. Soon after Dina filed the petition in August,Jinnah’s grand-nephew,Mohammed Rajabally Ebrahim, moved the HC,claiming one-sixth share in the estate.

Ebrahim has staked his claim on the basis of Jinnah’s will of May 30,1939 in which he had bequeathed the house to sister Fatima.

Dina has denied that Jinnah left such a will. The case will come up for the final hearing next week.
