In a bid to increase field trials of genetically-modified (GM) plants and address the related bio-safety concerns,the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has decided to rope in experts who ensure stringent third-party monitoring of trials in addition to the existing mechanisms.
The ministry had invited expression of interest from independent agencies with expertise in managing biotechnology and bio-safety. Sources said the MoEF is now vetting proposals to enhance monitoring of confined field trials of GM plants.
The objective is to implement a pre-determined approach for monitoring all confined field trials of GE plants across the country from pre-sowing,sowing,various stages of crop development,harvest and during the period of post-harvest land use restriction.
The move comes after meetings of the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC),the apex panel for granting approval to large-scale activities and commercial release of GM products. The GEAC is learnt to have underscored the urgent need for setting up efficient monitoring system.
Sources in MoEF said the scrutiny of proposals could take a little longer as several committees and legalities are involved.
There is considerable interest,research and commercial activity involving GM organisms in agriculture and health care sectors in India.
