Finance minister P Chidambaram today asked chief commissioners of indirect taxes to focus on top 100 taxpayers, which make up 90 per cent of the total collection for most tax categories.

He also directed the central board of customs and excise (CBEC) to target the 12 lakh non-filers of service tax, expressing confidence that the budget target for revenue collection in the current fiscal would be met.

“I have impressed upon chief commissioners to keep close tab on 100 top taxpayers…We are targeting 12 lakh non-filers and stop-filers of service tax,” he told reporters after inaugurating the conference of chief commissioners and director generals of the CBEC.

Last year too,the finance minister had issued a similar instruction as,he had said, the top 100 taxpayers contribute the maximum to the exchequer while the rest contribute just 5 per cent.

The government has set a target of collection Rs 5.65 lakh crore from indirect taxes including customs, excise and service tax,in 2013-14. The government collected Rs 4.73 lakh crore from indirect taxes during 2012-13.

Confident that the economy will grow by about 6 per cent in the current fiscal,Chidambaram said the revenue department will be able to achieve the target of 19 per cent increase in the indirect tax collection.
