Martha Dodray,a polio worker in Bihar was honoured with a United Nations Foundation award for her work in protecting children from the disease. The front-line polio worker who is performing heroic work in protecting children from the disease,was honoured at the Global Leadership Awards Dinner of 2013 hosted by the UN Foundation and the UN association of USA in New York city.
Dodray,who hails from Darbhanga,said she was delighted,humbled and honoured. We need to work together to eliminate polio from regions where the disease still exists, Dodray said. She said she never thought that she would come to the US and meet global dignitaries who would appreciate her work.
Besides Dodray,awards were bestowed on Malala Yousafzai for speaking out for girls education in Pakistan; US ambassador to the UN Samantha Power for her fierce commitment to human rights; General Electric,Africa,their work in improving health care for women and children through the Secretary-Generals Every Woman Every Child movement; filmmakers 10×10 who created Girl Rising to raise awareness of the importance of girls education; and other front-line polio workers like Dodrey.
