Telecom regulator Trai on Wednesday said it would submit recommendations on reducing the Access Deficit Charges (ADC) to the government in a week.
‘‘We will reduce ADC,’’ said Trai Chairman Pradip Baijal, a day after Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran said he was not opposed to changes in the ADC regime.
The Department of Telecom (DoT) and Trai had held opposing views on ADC until yesterday, when Maran indicated that the Rs 5,000 crore ADC paid by private operators, largely to BSNL, was likely to be reduced. Baijal confirmed that ADC may go down if the telecom regulator’s recommendations are accepted, ‘‘We are submitting recommendations next week,’’ he said.

Reliance Info may take DoT to court

• New Delhi: Reliance Infocomm may move court against the government decision to impose a penalty of Rs 150 crore on it. DoT had slapped the penalty on Reliance Info last week for flouting the licence agreement. “The court is one of the options for us. We are exploring all options as Reliance has not flouted any licence agreement and there is no need for us to pay the penalty,” a company source said. The company is planning to send its response to DoT on the showcause notice by the end of this week. DoT had issued the showcause, asking why Reliance Info should not pay up Rs 150 crore for violating the licence agreement. “We will wait for DoT’s response after we send our reply to the showcause notice. If the government still finds us guilty, we might look at taking the legal course of action,” the source said. — Prachi Verma |
