CHENNAI, April 9: The Cancer Institute, Adyar has undertaken a major study on mortality due to tobacco use in the city. A pilot study had revealed that there is an 80% higher risk of death from all causes among smokers, in comparison to non-smokers. Dr V Shanta, Chairperson of the Cancer Institute, said tobacco was responsible for as much as a third of all cancers, apart from a major portion of cardiovascular and chronic respiratory disorders.
