Maharashtra CM Sushilkumar Shinde today announced a probe into the affairs of the Children’s Aid Society, which is chaired by his aide Sitaram Waghmode.

Last week, The Indian Express reported how Waghmode was running a fiefdom at the institution meant to protect Mumbai’s vulnerable children.

‘‘‘I was shocked to read the reports in The Indian Express,’’ Shinde said. ‘‘I have ordered an inquiry. If the charges are true, I will not hesitate to act against erring officials.’’ Waghmode has been refurbishing his office and home (meant for his superintendent) at the David Sasson campus in Chunabhatti, while his wards go barefoot and the society flouts child-care laws. Shinde has asked the Principal Secretaries of Social Justice, Public Works and Women and Child Welfare Departments to submit reports on the affairs of the Dongri children’s home.

It was the CM who appointed Waghmode to a post that was once held by philanthropists and eminent citizens. Shinde now insists nothing will be swept under the carpet. ‘‘Once the inquiry report is received, we will initiate measures,’’ he said. Shinde admitted it was valid to question how Waghmode was appointed, and how he ran the society without a council as mandated by its constitution.
