At least seven persons were injured in violence that erupted in a south Delhi locality this evening as agitated people clashed with policemen and set a police post on fire after the men in uniform allegedly misbehaved with hawkers selling a holy book.

Trouble began at around 5 pm near Jamia Nagar area as policemen tried to remove a stall set up by hawkers and some copies of the holy book fell on the ground, police said.

Agitated people then reportedly attacked the policemen and went on the rampage, setting a nearby police post on fire and damaging a number of vehicles.

Police used teargas on the angry crowd and resorted to a baton-charge, sources said.

At least four policemen and three persons were injured in the violence and were rushed to a nearby hospital.

A senior police official said the situation was later brought under control and a large number of policemen were rushed to the area.

Barricades were also put on roads in the area to regulate traffic and the movement of people.
