Sania Mirza defeated compatriot Rushmi Chakrvarty 6-3, 7-5 in the final to win the $10,000 ITF women’s tournament at Jakarta, Indonesia today.

Sania was in full form as she raced ahead in the first set outplaying the fighting Rushmi to reach to a convincing 4-3 lead.

Playing an attacking game and accelerating her pace, the Wimbledon junior doubles champion proved her supremacy with some sizzling cross court shots and humbled Rushmi to take the next two games in a row.

The second set saw oscillating fortunes with Sania losing her concentration and slipping to 4-3 after a healthy 4-1 lead. Sania however survived her seasoned compatriots scare and took the next games. Though the game was equally poised and the two Indians gave their best to the Jakarta spectators with each winning a game thereafter and infusing more competitive spirit into the game.

Sania fumbled at 5-4 by missing a match point but finally came back to win the laurels at 7-5 to win her sixth professional ITF title.

Amritraj-Rik claim doubles title

TUMKUR: Prakash Amritraj partnering Rik de Voest of South Africa claimed the doubles title in the ATP challenger championships here today.

The Prakash-de Voest duo defeated the Slovakian pair of Michal Mertinak and Branislav Sekac 6-4, 6-3. While Amritraj and Voest won $775 each, the runners-up pocketed $450 each. In the singles final,Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber defeated Lee Childs of England 7-5, 7-6 (5) to claim the singles title.
