With the debate on reservations raging at elite academic institutions, President A P J Abdul Kalam today suggested an increase in seats in the centres of higher education to cater to the country’s knowledge industry needs. He, however, did not refer to the reservation issue.
Addressing a grassroots summit organised by the Press Institute of India here, the President also said that he had himself developed what he called a system of global human resource cadre in this regard.
‘‘The Indian youth faces the twin problems of accessing quality education and unemployment… that means in institutions of higher learning for engineering, medical science and specialised sciences we have to ensure that a large number of seats is available,’’ he said.
Kalam described the need for opening up more student vacancies at centres of higher education as a ‘‘mission’’ that should be achieved through public-private partnerships.
‘‘In this connection, I have developed a system of global human resource cadre. In the 21st century, India needs a large number of talented youth with higher education for acquiring, imparting, creating and sharing knowledge,’’ the President said.
