Lauding the Supreme Court order for re-investigation and retrial in Maharashtra of the Best Bakery case, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today said people can now trust the judiciary. ‘‘It is an example that people can now put their trust in the judiciary,’’ she said addressing an election rally here.

‘‘The state government and the Centre are similar in their misrule. Here, one has the freedom to openly indulge in corruption. Here, freedom exists to destroy the country’s communal peace and one can commit any wrong,’’ she said. ‘‘It is the Congress which has served the people and worked for the area’s progress after the 2001 quake,’’ she said, at the meeting on the second leg of her whirlwind tour of Gujarat.

In Jamnagar, she did take a dig at Chief Minister Narendra Modi while referring to the Best Bakery retrial.

She said Modi had misused his power to engineer a split in the society. ‘‘A higher post does not give one the right to overrule the law. The Modi government used its powers to destroy the social fabric and communal harmony in the state. Do not let it happen again,’’ she said. Criticising Vajpayee, she said: “One day he asks Modi to practise rajdharam. The next day, he appreciates him. It is difficult to understand his opinions,” she said.
