Panaji, April 19: Lt General J T R Jacob (retd) took over as the Governor of Goa today evening. He was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice M B Shah of the Bombay High Court. Shortly before taking over his new office Lt Gen Jacob resigned his membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He told a press conference that his resignation was to maintain constitutional propriety.
Uncertainty prevailed over Lt Gen Jacob’s oath taking ceremony till the last minute as the protocol department could not fix the exact time. Chief Justice Shah had to co-ordinate with both Maharashtra and Goa Governments to whose Governors he administered the oath of office on the same day.
Lt Gen Jacob is the ninth Governor of Goa. His predecessor T R Satish Chandran was asked to quit by the new BJP Government.
