The founder of the outlawed militant outfit Lashker-e-Toiba will lead a rally in the twin Pakistani cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Sunday to extend ‘political and moral support’ to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, who heads the Jamat-ud-Dawah – the parent organisation of the LeT, wants to convey a message to Kashmiris that ‘despite the current political turmoil in Pakistan, the people of Pakistan cannot and will not ignore the Kashmiri brothers.’

A statement issued today by the Jamat-ud-Dawah said Saeed is supervising arrangements for the ‘Kashmir Caravan’ which he will lead from the Liaqat Bagh ground in Rawalpindi to Aabpara area of Islamabad.

At Aabpara, which is located near the Lal Masjid, the participants of the rally will be addressed by leaders of the Jamat-ud-Dawah, Hurriyat Conference and political parties. The Jamat-ud-Dawah wants to ‘show full political and moral support towards its Kashmiri brethren’, the statement said.

After lying low for the past few years, Saeed resurfaced recently and has issued several statements in support of Kashmiri separatist leaders. On August 26, he announced that the Jamat-ud-Dawah would launch a countrywide campaign to make people aware of the ‘plight of Kashmiris’.

The Sunday rally will be the starting point of this ‘awareness’ campaign, the statement said. The Jamat-ud-Dawah has begun distributing banners, posters and pamphlets as part of its campaign. The organisation has also invited religious and political leaders to participate in the ‘Kashmir Caravan’.
