The Kerala Assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed the Monsoon Fishery (Pe-lagic) Protection Bill, 2007, seeking to exempt traditional fishermen from the trawling ban during the monsoon season.

The Bill provides for allowing fishermen for pelagic fishery without harming juvenile fish and fish eggs found in the sea bed. The Bill, introduced in the wake of SC directive imposing total ban on fishing in the breeding season, seeks to empower the Government to issue orders for permitting, regulating, restricting or prohibiting pelagic fishery.
