Former Union minister Maneka Gandhi is not going to like this. The J-K government has undertaken a massive task to get rid of the estimated 20,000-25,000 stray dogs across the Valley as a precaution against the spreading of rabies among the people.

Sources said the State Urban Housing Ministry has ordered the Srinagar Municipal Corporation to kill all the stray dogs in Kashmir in the ‘‘shortest possible time’’. The SMC has killed 9,000 dogs so far and plans to poison another 20,000.

‘‘We have begun with Srinagar city as the problem is more serious here than in the rural areas,’’ said J-K Urban and Housing Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir.SMC officials said around 120-130 dogs were being poisoned daily.
