Senior Congress leader Arjun Singh has said that his remarks on Rahul Gandhi were not directed against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has raised the country’s standing and image.

He also felt that the Congress party’s statement that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul would not like an environment of sycophancy was meant for sycophants.

“Absolutely not. And no not only that, I have not made any statement that Rahulji should replace Manmohanji. That question was posed to me. Is the Congress projecting Rahul Gandhi? My answer was, why not? It was all I said,” Singh said in an interview to a weekly magazine.

He was asked whether the depiction of his statement on Rahul was intended against the prime minister was correct. On the performance of the government under Manmohan Singh, the HRD minister said the prime minister has been able to get across many things which would make an impact on the future of this country.

Apart from the economic thing, the kind of expansion he has orchestrated in higher education, he felt that the country’s standing and image have moved up. “I think the country owes a debt to him. Never before has this kind of expansion taken place. Well, of course, some drawbacks like inflation and price rise are there. I am sure that also be will be effectively tackled in the next months,” he said.
