Finally, the government has announced the date of launching the National Rural Health Mission to be April 12, 2005.

According to Health Secretary P.K. Hota, ‘‘The mission seeks to provide healthcare to the entire rural population in the country and would try and bring efficiency, funds for infrastructure development and healthcare personnel accountable to local community.”

The mission plans strengthening immunisation and would also modify the National Maternal Mortality Scheme. Rs 1,400 would be given to women below poverty line for delivery, as also look at integrated management of childhood diseases.

‘‘We are trying to bring in more MBAs and chartered accountants in this sector. E-governance capacity would also be increased,’’ added Hota.
