CDMA (code division multiple access) players are talking to the government, to seek frequency in the 1900 MHz USPCS band, it is learnt. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s spectrum recommendation, which was issued recently, opposed allocation of frequency in the 1900 MHz USPCS band. Also, TRAI didn’t favour allocation of a mixed band plan of 1900 MHz USPCS and 2.1 GHz UMTS bands.
The spectrum policy must include allocation of USPCS frequency, according to Qualcomm India president Kanwalinder Singh. The USPCS band would have allowed for rapid technology deployment, as CDMA2000 equipment and dual band 800/1900 MHz handsets are readily available and widely deployed in these frequencies, he said.
He claimed the Trai decision was unfortunate as it perpetuated an unequal playing field for CDMA providers vis-a-vis their GSM counterparts. US-headquartered Qualcomm develops digital wireless communication products and services based on CDMA technology.
Singh said the biggest challenge is to get the spectrum cleared. Only then will the Trai recommendations translate into a policy, paving the way for a 3G revolution in India.
