In a move to protect tourists from being cheated and harassed, the Centre has asked state governments to enact the Tourism Trade Act. The state governments have also been requested to deploy tourist police at all important tourist destinations to check crimes against tourists. These were some of the recommendations Tourism Minister Renuka Chowdhury presented to members of the Consultative Committee on Tourism.

The state governments have also been asked to set up single-window clearance committees and similar tourism facilitation centres.

Choudhury reiterated her commitment to promote the North-East as a tourism destination, asking the Ministry of Home Affairs to review the restricted area provisions so as to open up more places in the region for tourists. She had a series of meetings with the Civil Aviation Ministry to discuss the upgradation of airports around tourism hotspots. A special thrust was also being given to rural tourism in view of its potential to create jobs, she said.
