Five people were arrested in connection with the killing of 11 labourers and a brick-kiln owner at Dinar village in Bihar’s Nalanda district late on Friday night, police said.

Nalanda District Magistrate Anand Kishore has been removed in the wake of the killing, official sources said today. He is being replaced by M.P. Paswan, who is currently working as Additional Secretary in the Welfare Department, Chief Secretary K.A.H Subramanian said. The outgoing Nalanda District Magistrate has been made Joint Secretary in the Welfare Department, Subramanian added.

Nine people, including notorious gangster Bipin Choudhary, who is currently lodged in Biharsharif jail, have been accused in the massacre. Superintendent of Police Amit Lodha said five people were arrested and sent to jail after being interrogated by Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Abhishek and Deputy Inspector General of Police, Patna Range, Ravindra Kumar.

Police are conducting raids to nab the others, Lodha said, adding that CRPF and Bihar Military Police personnel have been deployed in large numbers in and around the village in view of the tension there.

Lodha said the preliminary inquiry revealed that the killings were carried out because the brick-kiln owner refused to pay extortion money.

At least 15 criminal cases are pending against Choudhary in different police stations in Nalanda.

On the DIG’s directives, Officer-in-Charge of Sare police station Raghunath Singh and Inspector of Asthawan Circle Shiv Kumar Sharma have been suspended.
