At least two persons were killed and four others injured in an explosion in a high-security area in the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta on Monday.

Police officials said at least two persons were killed when the bomb went off in an area near the district courts in the capital of Balochistan province. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred in a high-security zone where the Governor’s House, Chief Minister’s secretariat and district courts are located, TV channels said.

The exact nature of the blast could not be immediately ascertained though police officials said they suspected it was caused by a bomb planted in a vehicle.

The explosion also destroyed at least five vehicles, including several auto-rickshaws.

The area was cordoned off by the security forces, who began scouring the site for clues.

Baloch nationalist groups campaigning for a greater say in the exploitation of the province’s abundant natural resources are usually blamed for such attacks. These groups have bombed gas pipelines, power pylons and other government installations in the past.
