East Bengal Club of Kolkata sounded an alarm for the other participants at the ASEAn Cup in Jakarta by blowing away top local club India Club 11 to nothing in a practice match. This was disclosed from their Calcutta Maidan headquarters by club secretary Swapan Bal. The match, the first of two East Bengal will get prior to the tournament proper, was played late Thursday night.
Eight East Bengal players scored in the match, with Indian team captain Baichung Bhutia scoring thrice, and overseas recruit Mike Okoro scoring twice. The rest of the goals came from captain Suley Musah, Kulungathan, Chandan Das, Dipak Mondal, Douglas D’Silva and Malswamathanga.
East Bengal will play Thailand’s Bec Terro Sasana, one of the top club teams of Asia, in their first Group ‘D’ match on July 14, following which they play Army FC of Phillipines on July 16.
