Within 48 hours of the killings of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) activists in Kooltoli in South 24-Paraganas district, a CPI(M) activist was shot dead in the wee hours today starting another round of blame game.

SUCI had alleged that its members were killed by the CPI(M)-backed miscreants who also injured about 60 party workers in the shootout at SUCI party office on Tuesday.

SUCI had named CPI(M)’s South 24-Paraganas leader and State Minister of Sundarban Development Kanti Ganguly guilty of the double murders and called a 24 hours bandh today.

Ganguly retorted that his ‘‘local unit was falsely implicated.’’ He said, ‘‘They have targeted me because they are threatened by the development work we have undertaken, I have already met Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya and told him everthing.’’ And now, CPI(M) has accused SUCI of murdering their activist.

SUCI, however, denied the charge and said ‘‘his killing was a result of a family feud and our party had no links with the incident.’’ Leader Provash Ghosh said, ‘‘We don’t believe in the politics of retaliation and counter-retaliation, like them.’’

Police have arrested 10 people suspected of having links with the murders in the last 48 hours.
