The whole country is going ga ga over Bollywood blockbuster Chak De India and its role in reigniting the passion for hockey among the common people, but Indian Hockey Federation President KPS Gill thinks otherwise.

Gill says the perception that the movie boosted hockey in the country is not correct and in fact it is the other way round.

“It’s a wrong perception. Because of the pre-disposition to watch hockey, people came to see the movie. Due to the lack of sufficient grounds and other facilities across the country, we cannot hold such kind of matches. For this, people went to see hockey in the movie,” Gill said.

The Shah Rukh Khan-starrer, vividly depicting the story of an underdog Indian women’s hockey team going on to become world champion, renewed the public’s interest for the game and the slogan ‘Chak De India’ (Come on India) became the tagline for every sport in which the country made waves in international arena.
