The crisis of admissions to professional courses that has rattled students and the administration alike for a week now blew over on Friday. Private college managements and the Karnataka government have agreed that the present pattern of admissions will be continued for the academic year 2003.

The Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell on August 28 will resume the seat selection process for Karnataka students from where it ended on August 14. The Cell has already completed admissions to medical and dental courses for both Karnataka and non-Karnataka students.

Engineering admissions for non-Karnataka students too are over, and engineering admissions for Karnataka students were under way when the Supreme Court order laying down fresh admission norms came on August 14.

‘‘The CET will continue on 75:25 basis for this year,’’ Higher Education Minister Dr G. Parameshwar announced at a media conference after a high-level team led by Chief Minister S.M. Krishna held two rounds of talks with representatives of private professional colleges.

The Minister elaborated, that the government will sponsor 75 per cent of seats to colleges and the rest are to be filled by colleges. The fee structure already notified will continue to remain in force for this year. ‘‘We have arrived at this decision in the interest of students only for this year,’’ Parameshwar said. As per the understanding reached, the government and colleges will each have a 50 per cent quota from the next academic year.
