NEW DELHI, JAN 2: The Union Cabinet today approved the repromulgation of the ordinance through which the Government had taken over the reins of the Indian Council of World Affairs last September.
The repromulgation has been necessitated as the ICWA ordinance lapsed yesterday and the Bill which sought to replace it could not be passed by the Rajya Sabha in the interregnum. It was passed by the Lok Sabha on December 18.
The Bill was listed for consideration in the Rajya Sabha on December 21, but couldn’t be taken up for discussion because of the deadlock over the Women’s Reservation Bill.
“The repromulgation of the ordinance has become necessary to maintain continuity and to enable the Government to continue with the repairs and renovation being undertaken in Sapru House, which houses the ICWA, and help resume its activities till such time as as passed by the Lok Sabha is considered and passed by the Rajya Sabha in the Budget session,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan told newspersons after the Cabinet meeting.
The ICWA was taken over by the Government on September 1 last year on the grounds of mismanagement and gross financial irregularities.
