Britain protested furiously on Tuesday to Iran over Guardians Council chairman Ahmad Janati’s comments that British government might have deliberately carried out the London bombings. One possible reason for the July 7 attacks, Janati had said in a nationally broadcast sermon, ‘‘is that the British government itself created this situation’’. The British Foreign Office called it a shame that recent condolences from Iran ‘‘had been followed by such irresponsible statements’’.

Cairo: Egypt’s cabinet said on Tuesday that the Egyptian biochemist being questioned here had no links with the London bombings. Egyptian authorities last week detained Magdy Elnashar, who has denied any role in the attacks. UK authorities have also denied that Elnashar was linked to the bombings.

London: British Finance Minister Gordon Brown will pledge an extra £ 20 million to fight terrorism and provide support for the victims of the London bomb attacks, Treasury officials said. Brown will also announce the creation of a new group working across government to make progress on the identification of further targets for asset freezing.

Islamabad:Police have launched investigations into the activities of more than 10,000 madarsas in Pakistan’s Punjab province following reports that three of the four suspected London bombers visited the country and studied in two such religious schools. Officials on Tuesday also said that Pakistani security forces had detained 25 suspected Islamist militants in overnight raids. —Agencies
