June 29:The Republican Party of India general secretary Ramdas Athavale today denounced the `coup’ launched by a rival faction within the party against the elected party president R S Gawai and demanded removal of rebel leaders Prakash Ambedkar and Raja Dhale. The coup leaders `expelled’ Gawai from RPI yesterday.

In a statement Athavale charged Ambedkar and Dhale with indulging in anti-party activities, indiscipline and finally breaking the party. “They have no power to expel Gawai from the party, on the contrary Gawai has every right and authority to expel Ambedkar and Dhale,” Athavale said.

The coup took place at a state-level meeting of the Ambedkar group here which was addressed by Dhale, whose controversial election as RPI chief earlier this year had brought to the fore the rivalry within the faction-ridden party despite the show of unity by several leaders. Ambedkar had supervised Dhale’s election as RPI chief in March.
