Mundra Port, which was the first west coast port in India to berth a Panamax coal vessel of 75,000 tonnes last year, has managed another first. It has managed to berth a Capesize vessel this time with a deadweight of 151,450 tonnes.
According to a company press release, this is the first time a vessel of this size has actually been able to berth at an Indian port, and directly get unloaded. Till now, such big vessels would unload at an anchorage point away from the port (where the depth of the water was higher), and then their cargo would be carried to the port in smaller vessels—this leads to not just delays in the ship moving out of the port, it also adds to transport costs.
