‘Unhe nahi pata aapki skin type kya hai…’: Rubina Dilaik says no to parlour facials — should you too?

"And rubbing, scrubbing, steam, sauna pata nahi kya kya karte hai ye log. Kayi baar kya hota hai ye sab aapko suit bhi na kare, aur reaction ho jaye," said the Bigg Boss star.

Whether you get a mani-pedi, a fresh blow dry or a relaxing spa, a day spent at the salon can help rejuvenate you and get you revved up for the coming week. However, Rubina Dilaik believes getting a facial done at a parlour can come with more risks than benefits.

In a podcast episode on her YouTube channel, the Bigg Boss star said: “Jab aap parlour mein facial karate ho, unke paas 2 ya 3 hi product rehte hain. Unhe nahi pata aapki skin type kya hai, ye aapke liye kaunse products suitable hai. And rubbing, scrubbing, steam, sauna pata nahi kya kya karte hai ye log. Kayi baar kya hota hai ye sab aapko suit bhi na kare, aur reaction ho jaye.”

(When you get a facial done at a parlour or salon, they have only 2-3 products to work with, they do not know your skin type, or which products would suit your skin. And rubbing, scrubbing, steam, sauna – don’t know what they end up doing. A lot of times, these products do not suit you, and you might end up getting a reaction)

Plus physically scrubbing your skin can end up causing damage to it, and increase your pigmentation, she added.

While Dilaik’s claims make sense to us, we decided to consult a skin expert to learn whether there’s actually any merit to them.

Are facials at parlours safe?

“While facials at parlours may seem relaxing, sometimes they can do more harm than good. This can happen when the staff is not trained properly, and the hygiene gets compromised,” said Dr Shareefa Chause, Dermatologist, Dr Shareefa Skincare Clinic, Mumbai.

According to her, many use the same tools on multiple clients without proper sterilization, which can spread bacteria and viruses from one person to another. This increases the risk of skin infections, breakouts, fungal issues, and even serious allergies.

“The symptoms that may be experienced in such cases are burning and stinging sensations, redness, bumps, rashes, and itching. Sometimes even the staff is not aware and they tend to use any product available in the market. However, these products may or may not suit your skin,” she explained, adding that they also use strong scrubs or rub your skin too hard, which can damage the outer skin layer and cause redness, sensitivity, or peeling.

Dr Chause recommended those with active acne and pigmentation to avoid harsh facials. “If you have sensitive skin or acne, such rough treatment can lead to concerning skin woes. Similarly, the products used in the parlour may be of a substandard quality and contain strong chemicals or fragrances that can trigger rashes, itching, or allergic reactions,” she said.

To add to that, the expert reiterated that in many places, basic hygiene like clean towels, fresh water, or sanitized tools are often ignored. “It is the need of the hour to visit the dermatologist and use the products recommended by them. It is a good idea to avoid artificial facials that can damage the skin,” she advised.
