Rohit Bal, one of India’s most celebrated fashion designers, passed away in Delhi on Friday night following a heart attack. He was 63. His last tryst with fashion was in October when he presented his collection at the grand finale of Lakme Fashion Week X FDCI 2024.
Along with sister and stylist Rhea, Sonam Kapoor paid tribute to Rohit Bal on his passing by donning elements of three of his most iconic looks from the vast expanse of his prolific career. Kapoor clubbed a white quilled statement neck piece from Bal’s Husn-e-Taihrat collection of 2015, a golden lace cape from Kroshni collection from 2016, and a white gown from Kaynaat collection of 2024 to create her own unique ensemble. Pulled back neat hair, sculpted cheeks and round earrings completed her look.
Sonam also penned a heart-felt tribute to Bal and posted it on Instagram along with a series of pictures wearing Bal’s creations on the runway. “Dear gudda, I hear about your passing on my way to celebrate Diwali in your gorgeous creation that you generously lent to me for the second time. I’ve been blessed to have known you and worn you and walked for you multiple times. I hope you are at peace. Always your biggest fan,” the actor said.
“I was so inspired by his last show, hopeful for the future he still had ahead. Over the years, I was privileged to walk for him numerous times and spent countless hours immersed in his art—trying on his bespoke costumes and runway masterpieces, and proudly wearing them on so many special occasions. His creativity and vision were unparalleled, and today, I honor and celebrate that legacy, cherishing the memories we shared,” she added.
Designer Anamika Khanna also shared a moving post dedicated to Bal on her Instagram, reminiscing her bond with the fellow artist. “Rohit bal! My friend, mentor and guide! Someone who I cherished, respected and loved. You will be missed deeply. Moments like these made it worth their while. May your soul be in design forever.”
“Love you Anamika, I can’t stop tearing up” Kapoor commented on Khanna’s post.
Fashion Development Council of India (FDCI) president Sunil Sethi confirmed Bal’s death on Friday evening. According to him, Bal was admitted to Aashlok Hospital in Safdarjung Enclave and was being treated by Dr Alok Chopra. “He had a cardiac arrest… heart failure. Rohit was a legend, we are completely shaken right now. We are trying to work out details for the cremation tomorrow,” he told PTI.
