NASA astronauts are going to fly in style, thanks to luxury fashion designer Prada who will be collaborating in the development of space suits for the 2025 Moon mission.

Prada engineers will work jointly with Axiom Space Systems engineers throughout the design process of the suits, according to the commercial space company.

According to Axiom Space, they will work together to create materials and design elements to safeguard astronauts from the unique challenges of space and the lunar environment.

“We are thrilled to partner with Prada on the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit,” the company’s chief Michael Suffredini said in a statement, BBC reported.

The next-generation space suits are projected to deliver increased capabilities for space exploration to astronauts. They will also be obligated to furnish NASA astronauts with the necessary systems needed to access, live, and work on and around the Moon.

One astronaut told the BBC that because of their design experience, Prada was up to the task. That experience was gained not only on the Milan runways, but also through Prada’s participation in the America’s Cup sailing competition.

“Prada has considerable experience with various types of composite fabrics and may actually be able to make some real technical contributions to the outer layers of the new space suit,” Professor Jeffrey Hoffman, who flew five NASA missions and has carried out four spacewalks, told BBC.

However, he stated that people should not expect astronauts to wear “paisley spacesuits or any fancy patterns like that. Maintaining a good thermal environment is really the critical thing”.

Axiom presented a spacesuit earlier this year, stating it would be worn on the impending Artemis 3 mission.

The garment weighed 55 kg and was designed to be more comfortable for female travellers.

Artemis and Prada stated in a press release that they would utilise “innovative technologies and design” to allow “greater exploration of the lunar surface than ever before.”

The Artemis 3 mission will be the first time a crew has landed on the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972, and it will include the first female astronaut on the moon — Christina Koch.
